Status: Wave 2 complete. Triangulated per sources rule (T1 + T2 minimum per claim).

Reliability

By model year (CR + TrueDelta + autoreliabilityindex):

Fleet-wide repair cadence: RepairPal reports RAV4 unscheduled shop visits average 0.3x/year (vs. 0.4 for all vehicles), avg annual repair cost ~$429 — "excellent ownership costs"5.

Specific known issues — verified

2019 8-speed transmission shudder / low-speed lurch / hesitation — CONFIRMED - Toyota issued TSB T-SB-0107-19 (Aug 15, 2019): ECM reprogramming + shift-strategy relearn. Dealer procedure, ~90 min, reflash-only (no hardware)63. Owners who got it report "noticeably smoother downshift, no hesitation on rolling stops." - CRITICAL: Toyota is NOT proactively notifying owners. The fix is available but you have to ask — meaning a candidate 2019 car may or may not have had it done. Verify via Toyota dealer VIN lookup before purchase6. - The 2019 is not "trapped" — the fix exists and works — but many 2019s on the used market have never been reflashed. This is a hard-gate item, not a nice-to-have. - Issue reportedly largely resolved from the factory on 2020+3.

2019–2020 low-pressure fuel pump recall — CONFIRMED - Part of Toyota's massive multi-year fuel pump recall (initially announced Jan 2020, amended/expanded through Jan 2025). Failed pump can stall the engine while driving78. Covers certain gas AND hybrid vehicles produced roughly July 2017 – Sept 2019, with later amendments reaching into some 2021 Prime builds9. - 2021 RAV4 Prime also subject to a separate Customer Support Program for high-pressure fuel pump seepage (24,200 vehicles, late 2019 – early 2021 build)7. Gas Adventure is NOT the Prime, so this one doesn't apply to Hannah's target — but the low-pressure recall can. - Action: every 2019–2020 candidate needs a VIN check at toyota.com/recall or nhtsa.gov/recalls. Free fix at any Toyota dealer, but confirm completion paperwork.

Entune / infotainment glitches (2019–2020, pre-facelift) - Documented pattern: screen freezes, reboot loops, unresponsive touch, "stuck on Toyota logo." TSB exists for 2020–2021 head units; the 2019 is excluded from that TSB — serious cases have required JBL head-unit replacement103. Annoying but not safety-critical. Another reason to skew toward 2021+.

Engine (2.5L A25A-FKS, gas Adventure) - Reported issues on 2019: excessive oil consumption, groaning on acceleration, leaking coolant, defective coolant valves, sudden stalls3. Frequency drops sharply on 2020+. Gas Adventure trim uses this engine across all four years — the engine itself isn't the problem, the 2019 launch year is.

Hybrid vs gas: Hannah's target is the gas Adventure. Hybrid RAV4 has its own profile (lower PainRank on CarComplaints, stronger CR reliability) but isn't on the table here — the Adventure trim was gas-only in this window (Woodland Edition and later trims added hybrid options).

Safety

CPO Availability (Denver)

Toyota Certified Used Vehicle (TCUV) program15: - 160-point Quality Assurance Inspection - 12-month / 12,000-mile Comprehensive Warranty (from date of CPO purchase) - 7-year / 100,000-mile Limited Powertrain Warranty (from original in-service date — so a 2019 CPO's powertrain coverage expires late 2025 / early 2026, a 2021's runs into 2028, a 2022's into 2029) - 1-year roadside assistance, CARFAX report included - Only Toyota dealers can sell TCUV; must be ≤6 model years old and <85,000 miles at certification

Denver metro dealer landscape (confirmed active CPO programs)16: - Stevinson Toyota West (Lakewood) — CPO search returns multiple certified RAV4s; known for Boulder/Longmont reach - Mountain States Toyota (Denver) — large CPO RAV4 inventory including multiple gen-5 model years - Groove Toyota (Englewood) — CPO inventory includes 2020–2021 RAV4s - AutoNation Toyota Arapahoe — chain-level CPO participation

Adventure trim reality check: Denver market snapshots from KBB/TrueCar/Edmunds show ~60+ used 2021 RAV4s (all trims) in the metro, but Adventure trim is a minority of that inventory — it was the "outdoorsy" mid-trim, less popular than XLE Premium or Limited. Realistic expectation: 2–8 Adventure CPOs in-market on any given week across all Denver Toyota dealers combined, mostly 2020–2021, typically 35k–70k miles, priced $24k–$29k CPO. Hannah may need patience and/or alerts — or may need to accept a non-CPO private-party Adventure + extended warranty as a backup plan.

Pricing (Denver market)

KBB/Edmunds Denver-area data1718: - Avg list, any used 2020 RAV4 in Denver: $24,728 (all trims) - Avg list, any used 2021 RAV4 in Denver: $25,011 (all trims) - 2021 RAV4 Denver inventory spread: $23,487 – $42,990 (all trims) - Used RAV4 Adventure nationally: $13,985 – $38,984 range (2018–2022, wide mileage spread) - Adventure commands roughly a $1,500–$2,500 premium over same-year XLE AWD

Hannah's target box (Adventure, 50–75k mi, Denver): - 2019 Adventure: ~$20,000–$23,000 (CPO if available; fewer Adventure 2019s built, transmission stigma). Under target but see 2019 watchouts. - 2020 Adventure: ~$23,000–$26,000 CPO; $22k–$24k private/non-CPO. Closest to $25k ceiling. - 2021 Adventure: ~$25,000–$28,000 CPO — likely to breach $25k hard ceiling in CPO trim. Non-CPO with 65–75k mi may squeak in at $24k–$25k. - 2022 Adventure: ~$27,000–$30,000 — above ceiling. Skip unless a uniquely aggressive deal surfaces.

Rough single-number avg for CO (target box): ~$26,000.

Cargo Fit (1 dog + field gear)

Verdict

🟢 Strong candidate — with a clear year preference.

Target: 2021 Adventure, CPO, <75k miles. Fallback: 2020 Adventure, CPO. The 2021 earns Consumer Reports' strongest reliability mark ("much more reliable"), has only one recall, post-dates the 2019 transmission-shudder era and the 2019–2020 fuel pump recall entirely (for gas), and its TCUV powertrain warranty runs through 2028. Cargo fit is genuinely excellent for 1 dog + field gear, the Adventure's 8.6" clearance + Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD handles CO winters, and the driving position satisfies the "sits high / truck-feel" want without the F-150 baggage. The 2019 is not automatically disqualified — the transmission TSB fix works when applied — but it requires more diligence (TSB completion verification + fuel pump recall completion via VIN), trades known-quality for ~$3k savings, and Hannah has one lemon behind her already. Not worth the anxiety tax. Pricing pressure is the main blocker: 2021 Adventure CPO in Denver will frequently sit at $26k–$28k, above the $25k ceiling. Plan B is a non-CPO 2020 Adventure (~$22k–$24k) with a third-party warranty, or a 2021 XLE Premium AWD if Adventure-specific inventory doesn't surface.

Biggest single watchout for Hannah: if a 2019 Adventure tempts on price — do not buy without written proof that TSB T-SB-0107-19 has been performed and the fuel pump recall is closed on the VIN. That's the exact class of "model-year lemon" failure she's trying to avoid repeating.
